Okay, so it's not really a barn find. I knew it was out there, sitting, gather dust. My daughter bought this car several years ago with the intention to fully restore it. But alas, it turned out to be a bigger project than she imagined. So, it ended up stored in my barn. My daughter bought the car from someone who also dreamed of restoring it but had too many projects. Below was their description at the time she bought it. (The photos in this ad are new and reflect the current state of the vehicle.)
Yes this is an old Saab that has sat in the sun. Yes the dash is cracked. Yes some of the 1986 wiring insulation is deteriorating (I have fixed a fair amount of this but some still remains). Yes the passenger caliper has a slight clunk in reverse. Yes the headliner is sagging. Yes the factory Clarion radio is not fully working.
As far as the radio, it is still the factory Clarion radio and equalizer. The equalizer does power on as does the radio, but they are not fully working.
The major mechanical issues that I know of with the car are as follows (cosmetic issues are addressed below). It leaks a lot of power steering fluid (it looks like from a hose and does not appear to be the rack itself), a little transmission fluid, a very little coolant (from a freeze plug), and possibly a very little engine oil (though I have not seen the oil level drop so it does not appear to be leaking much if at all or burning oil). The gas gauge is intermittent. There is a very slight (just enough to smell) fuel leak at the top of the fuel pump.
It has 155,137 miles on it, however the odometer is not currently working. My guess would be it stopped working when it was parked by the previous owner, but I cannot be certain. I have driven it approximately 600 miles or so since I bought it. [My daughter drove it about 200 miles after that.]
The car currently has a tuned APC box in it. I will include a stock one I picked up. The stock one makes the APC solenoid click open and closed for some reason so I have always run the tuned one.
Just after I purchased the car I put new tires on it. They are Falken Ziex tires and only have about 600 miles on them. I also did new pads, rotors, and a bleed on all four corners and the brake grab hard now. Also installed new soft lines for the brakes up front. Steering is tight and suspension feels good. It looks like it has had new shocks, but that was before I owned it.
The exterior has some wear for sure. It has sat in the sun so some oxidation has definitely occurred. There is a large dent on the driver side rear quarter panel that was there when I purchased the car. The paint is far from perfect. The wheels are in good shape.
There is almost NO RUST on the whole car. There are few small spots of surface rust on the body, but it is pretty much rust free.
The interior is in fairly good shape. As mentioned before the dash is cracked. The driver seat is ripped as shown in pictures, but all other seats have no rips in them. The trim piece for the dashboard can be seen drooping. It only has one minimal crack in it and simply needs to be re-stuck to the dash itself. It does have the front passenger factory Saab all weather floor mat for what it’s worth.
I just got it back from EOS Motorsports in Boulder [2020]. They went through and diagnosed a hard start issue and over fueling issue. This led to replacing the ECU and spark plugs. During diag, EOS found the O2 sensor was stuck at .8 (lots of fuel) and confirmed the sensor was working correctly. The car now starts right up and while I have not had it emissions tested since the repairs, the O2 sensor is now reading the correct fuel values.
Since I have had it, I have installed quite a few new parts (I’m sure I am missing a few things):
- New tires
- New clutch
- New clutch slave cylinder
- New clutch hydraulic line
- New front brake lines
- New front and rear pads and rotors
- One new/used front caliper
- New/used ECU
- Lots of little interior and exterior trim pieces
- New spark plugs
- New spark plug wires
- New engine air filter
- New/used distributor with Hall sensor
- New/used MAF
- New Ignition Control Module
- New Ignition Coil
- New Coolant reservoir cap
- [ Dashboard (but not instruments) ]
Parts the car will come with [I don't think any have been lost, but it's possible]:
- New injector O-rings. The injectors are not currently leaking
- Spare APC Solenoid
- Spare Injectors
- Spare Ignition Control Module
- Spare wheel center cap
- Spare Distributor Cap x2
- Spare Belts
- Weather stripping
- Spare stock APC box
The engine does not currently run. My daughter thinks something happened with the fuel pump but she could not get it sorted. I suspect it would not take much for it to be drivable once again, but this is more of a project than a daily driver. You will need to trailer it home.
Price is negotiable, but please don't ask "what's the lowest you will take" when you haven't even looked at it. Come see it, understand what you're getting, and make me a reasonable offer.
